Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (“Harmony” and/or “the Company”) is pleased to report good progress is being made by its initiative to reconnect with former employees in the Free State, through its Project Ku-Riha. The aim of Project Ku-Riha is to improve the system of compensation for mineworkers who suffer from occupational lung disease, to address the related claims backlog and to ensure that claims are paid more speedily and efficiently.
To date, Harmony has been able to trace more than 7,500 former miners and has assisted more than 150 with their outstanding compensation claims. In total, 18 500 households have been visited.
Harmony’s RECONNECT initiative, launched in collaboration with TEBA to trace and stay in contact with former Harmony employees in the Free State and major labour-sending areas, is aligned with the national Department of Health’s Project Ku-Riha that was launched in mid-2015. Harmony’s initial RECONNECT initiative was launched in Welkom/Matjhabeng on5 June 2017 and runs until 31 July 2017. All households in Wards 16 and 17 were visited in June 2017 with the Letsetse Secondary School being used as an administration base. The door-door visits were then extended to Wards 26 and 28 and Hani Park in July 2017.
Currently, Harmony is looking for approximately 800 more former employees within the Matjhabeng area who are thought to have unpaid compensation claims.
From 1 August 2017, TEBA will take over management of the administration process. In the wider Matjhabeng area, former employees or their dependants wanting to update their contact details and find out if they have unpaid occupational lung disease benefits due to them, should contact:
