Skills Development and Training Programme

The programme is implemented in areas that are traditional source of labour for the mining industry and have been adversely affected because of the downscaling of the industry, where tens of thousands of jobs have been lost and workers sent home in the last decade. The combined effect of HIV/AIDS and retrenchment on these rural communities has been devastating. The humanitarian and pragmatic consequences of this situation need to be dealt with, in part through training to improve employment prospects or, more significantly, through the strengthening of entrepreneurial skills.

Teba Development acts as a facilitator of local development by working in co-operation with other stakeholders in order to provide integrated support services for local economic development in the areas of training, entrepreneurial support, equipment and material provision and facilitating links to other small medium and micro enterprises (SMME) support (including capital access) as possible.

Economically inactive communities have been trained in various trades that are appropriate to their socio-economic context, such as poultry farming, brick laying, welding, car repairing, sewing, plumbing and electric wiring. Two thousand six hundred (2 600) people have to date been trained successfully. Of the total number of people who have completed their training to date, 80% have either found employment or have started their own enterprises.

Participants are also assisted to access funding to acquire equipment and materials to start their enterprises, in a form of revolving loan scheme. Participants are provided with follow-up support and mentorship until such time that the businesses are self-sustainable.
