Schools Assistance Programme

This Schools Assistance Programme assists the most disadvantaged of schools in rural areas to develop infrastructure, thereby establishing a sound base for education. The main target is schools in rural communities, built in sticks and mud. Teba Development uses the services of local contractors to build new classes, erect toilets and provide water services (boreholes, water tanks, mist nets etc) to the schools.

Classrooms building
The replacement of mud schools with safe concrete made structures is a priority.  Old classrooms are renovated and additional classes are built. Before any classroom is built memorandums of understanding are drawn amongst Teba Development, the School Governing Bodies (SGBs) and the Department of Education, to ensure that the partners can provide the teachers and sustain the project, after Teba’s handover.

Safe water supply
An integrated approach to water provision is followed. Rainwater tanks are installed, and a borehole is fitted with a hand pump in order to pump water into the tanks, which are then connected to a tap that can be supervised to ensure proper water use. Innovative technology in the form of fog-collector-mist nets is used in some areas to collect the fog and convert it to drinking water.

Sanitation
The sanitation system that is implemented at the rural schools consists of an ECOSAN toilet system (urine diversion system) rather than a conventional pit latrine. Municipal sewer connections are usually not available. Provision is also made for persons with disabilities at the school by erecting special toilets for people with disabilities.

School gardens
Schools are assisted to start and sustain food gardens. Water collected from the tanks is also used for the gardens, and the school benefits by harvesting the waste from the toilet for school gardening.

School furniture refurbishment and computer donations
Schools are assisted to refurbish their old furniture and put it in good shape to be used again. In 2005, we donated 16 computers to needy schools in Swaziland, assisting the school to train learners in computer literacy.
