12 November 2009: Batandwa gets a new wheelchair.

On the 1st of September Carol Roberts, the Pensions and Operations Coordinator at the RMA, opened her inbox to find a desperate cry from Hilda Kenya a Multi Skilled Clerk from Umtata.

Hilda’s daughter is disabled and the chair she had been using for some time had broken, she had borrowed a chair from someone else in the meantime, but upon the promise from Social Welfare that they would only help in December she became somewhat anxious.

Carol Roberts who wanted to assist Hilda Kenya with her plea sent an e-mail to Dr. Deodat Kritzinger ( Medical Officer, RMA) and asked him whether RMA could assist.  The Doctor responded by advising Mandisa Jojo (Pension Medical Case Auditor, RMA) to assess Hilda’s situation and possibly arrange to get spares for the old chair – he too advised that Carol should contact TEBA for assistance in the meantime. Carol did not leave it there - she sent an e-mail to all the RMA Medical Case Auditors asking whether they knew of anyone who could assist Hilda.  To cut a long story short, the light at the end of the tunnel appeared when Colleen Harrocks (Nursing Manager; RMA) sent an e-mail to Marissa Nel from Marissa Nel and Associates, requesting a second hand chair that might be up for sale.  There were many ‘behind the scenes’ e-mails between colleagues and friends and then …..

On the 2nd of September Marissa Nel extended a helping hand to someone in dire straits, she wrote: “,Kindly order a wheelchair for this child and ask Carel to invoice Footprints into Africa Foundation, we still have some funds left…”

The kindness of Marissa Nel and Associates ensured that Batandwa will have a chair, but, how would she get it? Carol by then had already spoken to Gerhard Human who had offered to assist with the transport of the wheelchair to Umtata

The events in early September should serve as a reminder to all that alone we are only so strong, but when working as a team we can accomplish anything.
