13 October 2005: Small Scale Mining Workshop 14 – 15 Nov 2005

Small scale mining is an attractive development option with several positive impacts that work towards alleviating the development deficit in southern Africa.  These include the promotion of small and micro enterprises, broad-based participation in mining, especially by the poorest of the poor and economic diversification.

However, SSM is better known for its negative characteristics, such as exploitation of women and children, environmental degradation, dangerous working conditions, externalisation of costs and loss of revenue to the state.

To ensure that SSM contributes to sustainable development, its positive attributes need to be maximised while minimising the negative impacts.  This requires capacity building and skilling of the miners themselves, local officials, legislators, researchers, large mining company officials and trainers.

This workshop is intended to explore the critical ways in which SSM interacts with the environment and society and to identify key interventions. Issues to be explored include SSM and development, formalising SSM and supporting SSM.

The workshop is aimed at local authorities, large mining companies, small scale miners, development agencies, training and research institutes and regulators.
