TEBA Limited was formally established in 1902, with the objective of assisting the growing Witwatersrand mining industry in sourcing and engaging workers to work on various mines. TEBA stations were established as far afield as Malawi and Angola. Currently, TEBA Limited has offices in Southern Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana and South Africa. A total of 400 Permanent and 150 Temporary staff operate out of the 68 TEBA offices with an additional network of 25 offices that have been established on mine property and these perform engagement and linkage services for the mine Human Resources departments.
A number of related services grew out of the initial goal of labour procurement, viz. cash transmission, social support (compensation and other industry monetary benefits) and communication services between migrant workers and their families. These services evolved into community support programmes such as the construction of roads, bridges and clinics.
More recently, the mining workforce has stabilized and there has been a shift away from short-term contract workers. Mineworkers are more career-orientated and have a long-term focus on their employment in the mining industry. As a consequence of this development, the volume of recruitment has reduced substantially. However, there remains a need to improve the skill levels of TEBA Limited staff, particularly with regard to scientific selection processes.
